German artist BBB Johannes Deimling’s work often involves the physical attachment of objects to his body to unsettling effect. These Acted Images evoke unconscious fears using an undercurrent of bizarre humour. Deimling enacted his performance Don’t Hurt Me, engaging the Cornerhouse visitors and the public passing by Oxford Road on foot and on buses.
Deimling’s invoking of the uncanny through the abject is echoed by Kleinodtotsod, a video work by John Bock that hints at the malevolent nature of domestic space. Kleinodtotsod was installed as a large-scale looped projection in the Cornerhouse gallery for the duration of the day. Described as one of the most interesting characters of today’s German art scene, and short listed for last years Hugo Boss prize, Bock has shown internationally including at the ICA, London, Venice Biennale, and Manifesta 5. This will be his first screening in Manchester.
